7 Best Mini Laptops You Need To Own [Top Picks]

Mini laptops, also known as netbooks, offer the same functionality and aspect as regular devices but with a smaller form factor.

Mini laptops typically have lower-power hardware, smaller displays, fewer ports, and cramped keyboards. Computer technology is constantly evolving and developing, so there are always exceptions to the rule.

Additionally, portable computers are often very affordable, offer long battery life, and are generally easy to use.

M1 MacBook Air (2020):

Many people agree that the new M1 Macbook Air might be the best laptop ever created. The 2020 MacBook Air retains the slim and sleek profile that has made it a favorite among consumers. It also incorporates the new M1 chip (faster than virtually any laptop CPU) and has better battery life than its predecessors.

It did not have enough power for content creators – those who generally choose Mac over PC. The M1 Air has a lot of extra energy and storage, making it on par with the MacBook Pro. For college students, creatives, and business professionals, the laptop waiting for you is now available.

This award-winning laptop is priced under $1000, and Amazon has periodically dropped the price to $850. It is less impressive than laptops from Dell and Microsoft, but watch this space for deals on it.

Key Features:

  • The Apple M1 is a powerful laptop with a 13.3-inch display and a 2560 x 1660-pixel resolution.
  • It has 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

  • The device’s chassis is made of a thin, unibody aluminum design.

  • The laptop was with great speakers and a Magic keyboard.

Dislikes:

  • The design is outdated compared to the latest models
  • There are a limited number of ports

Dell XPS 13 (2020):

The new Dell XPS 13 update makes it one of the best small laptops on the market and a premium choice for any laptop size. This mini laptop has excellent reviews for its performance and is a sleek and compact design.

It is a good choice for someone looking for a smaller machine. The device has impressive performance and long battery life. It runs Windows and is excellent for use with a 4K UHD display. This laptop has a 13.4-inch touchscreen display with Intel HD Graphics, an 11th Generation Intel Core i3 processor, and 8GB of RAM.

This laptop is lightweight and portable, able to perform at a high level even when on the go. The Windows-based notebook is more expensive than other trim laptops, but it is worth it if you prefer Windows.

The XPS 13 is a beautiful machine from the outside in. Its interior is just as impressive. The lid’s frost-white anodized aluminum finish is cool to the touch and looks stylish when going in and out of my bag. The sleek Dell logo looks like an elegant broach, adding just the right amount of glitz.

I like the twin-coil hinge on laptops that makes opening the device with one hand as simple as turning a page in a book. Once the laptop opens, you will see more of that snowy white theme. The Arctic White deck is made from a patented glass-fiber weave resistant to stains. Running your fingers over the textured surface feels like ASMR, but for your hands.

The keyboard is positioned close to the top of the deck, leaving enough space for a touchpad.

Key Features:

  • The computer is a Dell Inspirion 13.4-inch laptop with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor,
  • This Dell laptop has 16GB of RAM and a 512 M.2 NVMe SSD.

  • The battery life on this device is excellent – you can expect to use it for a long time without recharging it.

Dislikes:

  • The device lacked any legacy ports, making it difficult for devices to connect.

LG Gram 16:

We recently got a chance to test and review the new LG Gram 16. The LG Gram is a small laptop designed to be lightweight and portable. It has many attractive features, so we decided to include it in our small laptop category.

It weighs only 2.62 pounds, making it an excellent choice for people who want a laptop that is lightweight and easy to carry around. The phone is fragile, measuring just 0.66 inches in thickness. The battery will hold a charge for a full day despite being drained quickly.

The computer has an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 quad-core processor and 16GB of RAM. The Gram boots up quickly and has a touch sign-in feature. The Thunderbolt 4 port, one USB-C port, headphone jack, HDMI port, two USB Type-A ports, and microSD card slot are all present on the laptop.

The Dell XPS 13 is more expensive than the MacBook Air, but it offers more computing power and a bigger screen. If you are looking for a top-performing Windows alternative to the MacBook Air, we recommend the Dell XPS 13. Lenovo moved a few pieces around to make laptops even more challenging to solve.

Once located at the top of the deck, the top-firing speakers are now located on each side of the keyboard. When the power button is pressed on the right edge of the deck, it goes on vacation for three years and then returns to its original location. The previous power button on the docking station allowed for power on/off with the notebook docked.

The new design will be familiar to ThinkPad fans. The computer system has a matte black finish that makes it look stealthy, inconspicuous, and warm to the touch. The logos on the deck and lid were made more prominent on the assumption that they would be more appealing to a consumer audience.

Key Features:

  • Core i7-1260P is a powerful processor in this laptop with an Iris XE graphics card.
  • It has 16GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1TB SSD for storage.
  • The screen size is 16-inch, making it perfect for laptop or desktop use.

Like:

  • Users can choose between a traditional hard drive and a pair of SSDs for increased speed and storage capacity.
  • The laptop’s display is at least sixteen inches wide and has a resolution of WQXGA.
  • The weight of the laptop is meager, making it easy to carry
  • The laptop was decked out in an attractive, minimalist design
  • The numeric keypad on the computer had a dedicated set of buttons for different numbers, including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 0.

Dislikes:

  • The audio performance was just normal
  • There is some bloatware on the laptop
  • The bad thing is that its speakers are downward firing.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 9):

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon earned our rare 5-star rating in 2018. It is the best business laptop available and ideal for business settings. Since it was first created, the title of “world’s most reliable computer” has been held by Dell and HP.

However, rivals that have adopted more modern features and design cues from top consumer models have challenged their dominance in recent years. This is not a new idea but a series of improvements to a successful platform.

The new Lenovo 9th Gen model has some significant changes compared to previous models. For example, the display is now 16:10, the battery is more extensive, and the processors are updated. We should not forget what made the X1 Carbon so successful in the first place.

The ThinkPad is one of the most popular business laptops on the market. Its soft-touch carbon fiber surfaces and legendary keyboard are a welcome departure from the cold, hard metal surfaces found on other laptops.

Plus, it comes equipped with modern security features and plenty of ports, so you do not have to resort to using adapters. The camera and card reader are not as good as they could be, but the clever design tweaks make up for it.

Key Features:

  • This laptop has Intel Core i7-1165G7, a powerful laptop with a powerful graphics card and a large storage capacity.
  • It has a 1920 x 1200-pixel display and a battery that lasts 15 hours and a half.
  • It also has 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity.

What I Like/Dislike about the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 9):

Like:

  • The design is lightweight and slim, making it easy to carry around.
  • The keyboard was class-leading, providing a comfortable, responsive experience.
  • The quad speakers were huge, and the sound seemed suitable for a standard room.
  • There are many new and legacy ports in this laptop
  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon has a screen with OLED and 4K. This makes the viewing experience incredibly vivid and lifelike.

Dislikes:

  • The poor 720p webcam was barely able to capture any detail whatsoever.
  • The IR camera is not typically used in law enforcement or security applications.
  • The touchpad of this laptop is still small, making it difficult to click on the buttons.
  • There is no SD or microSD card slot on the laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano:

If you feel the 2.4 pounds is too heavy, consider the ThinkPad X1 Nano over the Carbon. The Carbon is robust and lightweight, weighing just 1.99 pounds.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano is a great choice. Its unique features make it a better choice than other laptops on the market. The Nano is the lightest ThinkPad laptop ever, weighing only 2 pounds.

The device is portable because it takes up less screen real estate. However, the 13-inch 2K panel is good, and the 16:10 aspect ratio makes up for the smaller size. The ThinkPad X1 Nano has enough processing power for most tasks, and its battery life is outstanding. The X1 Nano is like other ThinkPads, with a great keyboard and soft, durable surfaces.

It has many security features, like robust encryption and a hardware firewall.  The base model ThinkPad X1 Nano costs $1,349 and is equipped with an Intel Core i5-1130G7 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 13-inch, 2K panel. Doubling the RAM and storage to 16GB and 512GB increases the price by $1,727.

To purchase an Intel Core i7-1160G7 CPU, you will need to spend $1,847. This model comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. You can downgrade the CPU to a Core i5 processor for the same price but upgrade the storage to a 1TB SSD.

If you want the best possible performance, you can get a Core i7-11650G7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD for $2,010. There is another model with a carbon fiber lid and a more powerful Core i7-1180G7 CPU.

Key Features:

  • The laptop has a powerful Intel Core i7-1160G7, an Iris Xe graphics card, and a 512GB storage drive.
  • The display is a 13-inch, 2K (2160 x 1350) model with a battery lasting 12 hours.
  • The computer weighs 2 pounds and is 12.7 x 8.5 x 0.66 inches in size.

  • This model is pricey

MSI Modern 14:

MSI is slowly becoming a powerful player in the everyday and business notebook market. Even though it is most famous for its gaming devices, the company has been trying to make a name for itself as a budget-friendly player on the market.

We said the new Modern 15 might be one of the best value daily drivers out there. Today, our office is home to the 14-inch version of the Modern Family. The 12th Gen Intel Core processor is the same as the other Core processors with Intel.

This includes three options from the Alder Lake-U family. The lack of P-series options on this laptop does not mean that it will not provide a sound performance output- more on that later. This product will stop the scales at 1.4 kg.

The body panels are very flexible – especially the base.

Interestingly, this is not the thinnest notebook on the market, with a profile of 19.35mm. It would have been great to have some internal structural support, but we will not be too harsh on MSI for this.

After all, the lid can be opened with a single hand, and what is more interesting is that when you pass a certain angle, the backside of the base gets lifted from the ground. Ultimately, the side bezels are thin, while the top and bottom are thicker. The former one has a high-definition webcam. The next topic is the keyboard.

The laptop lacks a NumPad, which is not uncommon for a 14-inch laptop. The good news is that you get a backlight, decent essential travel, and clicky feedback. The keyboard is comfortable. A touchpad is perfect with smooth gliding and fast, accurate tracking. However, the clicking mechanism has a large dead zone on the far edges of both “keys.”

On the left side, there is the power plug, an HDMI connector, a USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) port with Power Delivery support, and an audio jack. You will find two USB Type-A ports on the laptop’s right side and a MicroSD card slot. Nine Phillips-head screws must be undone to get to the laptop’s internal components.

After removing the bottom panel, use a plastic tool to pry it away from the chassis. The MSI Modern 14 (C12M) features a Full HD IPS screen, model number BOE NV140FHM-N4V (BOE08D7). The resolution is 1920×1080. The screen size is 16:9, the pixel density is 157 PPI, and the pitch is 0.161 x 0.161 mm. The screen can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 56 cm.

Key Features:

  • The laptop I was testing had an Intel Core i3-10110U processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 128 GB SSD,
  • The display is 14″ with a 1920×1080 IPS screen (no touch screen)
  • The show has a 60 Hz screen refresh rate.
  • It also had 802.11ac wireless networking and Bluetooth.
  • The dimensions were 0.7 by 12.55 by 8.6 inches, and the weight was 2.8 lbs.
  • The operating system was Windows 10.
  • The laptop had a tested battery life of 8:42 hours: and minutes.

What I Like/Dislike about the MSI Modern 14:

Like:

  • The laptop is designed with a pleasing light configuration made of aluminum.
  • The laptop has a variety of ports and slots, including USB Type-C and microSD.
  • MSI Modern 14 has a reasonable contrast ratio and comfortable viewing angles.

Dislikes:

  • SSD on this laptop is low compared to its price
  • There is no thunderbolt present in this laptop

Acer Swift 5 (2022):

It is the first laptop I have ever recommended to others, and it has been worth the wait. The Swift 5 has an impressively long battery life, a sleek design, a comfortable keyboard, and fast performance scores.

When reviewing laptops, these are the most critical factors, and the Swift 5 met or surpassed my expectations. The new Acer Swift 5 has a more powerful 12th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU. This makes it faster and more powerful than its rivals. The device also has a sharp, alluring, and bright display.

The laptop has a sophisticated design scheme and a lightweight chassis, which makes it a great addition to any collection. Although things are sometimes perfect, that is life! Acer has told us that you can purchase this model by late June through its official store. The book will be available on Amazon by the end of July.

The refreshed Swift 5 is undoubtedly the most attractive notebook I have seen this year. Acer says its chassis has an “exquisite design.” While other OEMs may exaggerate with buzzwords and alluring language, Acer is right on the money.

The aerospace-grade aluminum chassis is covered in a rich, luxurious Mist Green color. What caught my eye were the gold accents on the edges that house the ports and the protuberant hinge that sports the word “SWIFT” in a subdued gray font. The anodized cover on the Acer laptop resists wear and corrosion and features the Acer insignia stamped with gold.

The lettering is shiny and looks very elegant. Open the lid, and you will find more delicious Misty Green goodness throughout the deck. However, I would not say I like the poor contrast between the keys and the letters on the keyboard. Some touch typists may not be as interested in this keyboard because it does not require as much finger movement. For those with vision impairments, it may not be easy to use.

Key Features:

  • The Acer Swift 5 touch display on the Intel Core i7-1260P laptop has a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, making it perfect for high-resolution photos and videos.
  • The laptop also has an Intel Iris Xe Graphics GPU and 16GB of RAM.
  • It has a 1TB SSD for storage and 2 USB-A ports, 2 USB-C ports, 1 HDMI port, 1 Headphone port, and 1 Kensington lock key.
  • The laptop is 12.2 x 8.4 x 0.59 inches and weighs 2.65 pounds.

What I Like/Dislike about the Acer Swift 5 (2022):

Like:

  • The laptop’s performance was rival-beating
  • Active transcoding service is available on this laptop. Zippy is a video transcoding service that makes it easy to convert videos from one format to another.
  • The SSD on this laptop is super fast.

Dislikes:

  • Much bloatware will irritate you
  • Speakers are of mediocre quality
